Help evaluating a no-start problem

If your vehicle will not start, a battery jump-start request may be a useful place to begin. Dim lights, clicking or a recent period of inactivity are details worth reporting, but they do not establish the cause. Tell the call handler what happens when you try to start the vehicle and whether any warning message is displayed. A jump start cannot be promised to solve every no-start problem.

Have the year, make, model and exact location ready. Say whether the vehicle is gasoline, diesel, hybrid or electric, whether you can access it, and whether it is in a garage or other confined location. Mention any previous unsuccessful assistance and any smoke, unusual heat, leaking or visible damage without opening or handling a battery to investigate.

Ask whether an appropriate provider can assess the request and whether a jump start is suitable for the vehicle. Confirm the charge, including how an unsuccessful attempt would be handled, and ask about the next step if the vehicle still will not start. Battery replacement, mechanical diagnosis and towing are separate services to discuss; they are not included or available merely because jump-start assistance is requested.

Frequently asked questions

Does a jump start mean the battery is repaired?

A successful start does not establish the condition of the battery or charging system. Ask the attending professional what follow-up is appropriate for the symptoms and vehicle.

Can an electric vehicle receive a jump start?

Tell the call handler the exact model and symptoms. An EV's high-voltage traction battery cannot be jump-started. Any low-voltage battery assistance must follow that vehicle's manufacturer instructions and be confirmed by a suitable provider.

What if the first attempt does not work?

Ask what further assessment or towing options are available and what they would cost before agreeing to additional work.
